Shutterfly Design a Gallery Wall Project

Wednesday, August 27, 2014

I am so excited to show you guys a project I had the opportunity to work on with Shutterfly. Being a photographer I was really excited about this project and I wanted to do something meaningful for my mother in law. She'd just moved and needed a little color on her new walls.

I chose to print some pictures of all her grandkids in her office. We tried to take a group picture but its really hard to get 7 kids under 6 all looking fantastic in one shot even with photoshop. So I decided to do head shots of each kid all with a similar background so it coordinated together for the gallery wall. I think finding a cohesive link within your pictures will make your wall look cleaner. I printed mine on. I decided on the 9 12x 12 gallery square wood wall art in for Debbies office. Below is a before picture.

Here I put the pieces out and arranged them how I thought I liked them this was the point I took the 2 other shots out. And added the J . I ended up just putting them on her desk after and a plaque so It worked out great.

Ok here comes the good stuff......

There's an awesome new feature Shutterfly has on their website called Design a Wall. It allows you to preview, order your product, then ships out a huge piece of paper with measurements already drawn out depending on the pieces you ordered. You stick this paper on your wall with some painters tape Then you put your nails in.
You will then rip the paper off the wall and are ready to put your pictures up.

What would usually take me an hour or two of eyeballing, repositioning measuring,
and levelling took about 5 minutes.

Shutterflys canvases and my wood pieces came ready to hang so I didn't have to worry about putting hardware on. It was awesome.Because She has 7 grandkids I originally ordered 9 squares But after putting it on the wall I decided it needed another element for the design.. So I bought a big letter D and spray painted it gold. That went in the place the other two squares would've gone.

I added the clock app to her computer added some accessories and her office looks clean bright and full of love from those sweet smiles. Sooo If you are one of those people with wall odd and don't want to nail a billion holes..and Want it made easy..
I will never hang picture the same again. I loved this so Much and she loved it so Much that I decided I want to do something similar for my moms miss mosh grandkid wall for Christmas.
Something she'll love much longer than the christmas season.

Cricut Design Star

Sunday, August 17, 2014

Hey guys sooo I'm so excited to let you know I will be participating in the new cricut design star!!! Eeek it's going to be so much freakin fun. When I went to Alt summit Last year I got to see the cricut explore in action and I was so excited for how it could make all my diy projects sooo much easier. So For the next couple months I will be participating in Challenges.

This months was something to wear. I found out I was going to be in this challenge a week before my post was due and I was on vacation in Utah.. So I had to think of a quick diy. And it had to be something you could wear.. Lets be honest I wanted to make a ball gown but alas I was at my moms house without my supplies... so I went to Target and found these vintage wash t shirts on clearance for 1.80... And I knew that would be my project I ended up buying about 10 so I could play with the explore.

I sometimes find it hard to find t shirts I like for my boys. I'm kind've anti character on shirt mom... I know I'm no fun... blah blah blah.. So I decided to make up a design... I really love aviator inspired items.. and I wanted to do a clean simple 60's arrow pattern... then use the t shirt as a layering piece in my twins wardrobes...

So I opened my Cricut, downloaded the program that comes with it... AND OMG It was so fun! I love that I can create anything in illustrator and upload it to my computer as a sag and use that file... the possibilities are endless... fonts.. custom logos...ect... And if you don't have illustrator don't worry.. You can make files in many a free program including inkscape. Did you know you can also google images and type in svg. You can also use jpeg and pdf.. Svg Just works better. Just remember to click the box that says for personal use. Or if you plan on selling something make sure you can change and use the image to sell.

Ok so I First picked my canvas.. which was a kids t shirt in size small... This is the best feature because they have already done the measuring for you, so you know it will fit in a size small kids t or hoodie or bag ect. NextI designed my arrows... knowing that when they printed out on the iron on I could space them a tad farther apart...

I put my iron on ... on top of my cutting mat shiny side up .. I set the pressure to card stock.. because the iron on didn't cut all the way through on my practice run... and voila! We got these little cute chevies. I was so excited My husband can attest to my jumping in the kitchen... OK so after its cut place them on your article of clothing place a rag on top of the iron on put the iron on top.... iron...and after 20 seconds remove the iron and peel the shiny side off the top.
It was soooo easy!!!

Especially with back to school..
I'm so excited to try out I really love typography on t shirts for kids.

And here's how I layered the simple graphic T.. I LOVE IT! I especially love this look for photos. Nothing that dates the photo too much..but still adds an edge and color.

So Yeah...I'm excited to really get my hands on this machine after a much needed rendezvous in Bear Lake. And guess what? The next challenge is events...BRING ON THE BACKDROPS!

Disclosure... I'm part of the Cricut Blogger Network.  I received a machine in exchange for review.  All opinions are my own. I am not being compensated for these posts,  but I am eligible for a prize with Cricut Design Space Star.
